A Vahlderix Consulting initiative for experienced leaders

Harmadik Pálya

The new orbit does not begin on your last day at work.

The end of an executive career is not the end of the journey. It is an opportunity to shape a new orbit consciously. Harmadik Pálya brings together experienced leaders who do not want to wait passively for whatever comes next. They want to prepare in good time, discover new perspectives and create something new from everything they have learned and achieved.

What is the challenge?

We rarely prepare for the third phase as consciously as we prepared for our careers

We spend the first decades of life learning and preparing.

During the decades that follow, we build careers, assume responsibility, make decisions and lead people or organisations. Yet many of us only begin to consider much later how we want to live when that role is no longer at the centre of our daily lives. Often we hear:

  • “I will take on a board position”
  • “I will have more time for my grandchildren”
  • “I can finally focus on my hobbies”
  • “I will travel more”

All of these can be valuable parts of the next stage of life.

But a handful of activities does not yet add up to a complete life strategy.

When the familiar working rhythm disappears, we lose more than a list of tasks.

The following may change:

  • Daily rhythm
  • Responsibility
  • Professional community
  • Feedback
  • Recognition
  • The sense that we are needed

The real question is therefore not simply how we will fill our time, but what kind of life we want to create.

Life as the journey of a spaceship

Three phases. Three different tasks.

Phase 1 – The launch

For a long time, the spaceship remains motionless on Earth. It is designed, built, tested and prepared for its journey. Then the countdown begins. The first bursts of fire erupt from the engines, the ground trembles, and smoke and flames fill the air. Slowly, the spaceship lifts away from the Earth.

We prepare for life in much the same way. As children and young adults, we learn, discover our abilities, experience our first successes and setbacks, and search for our direction. Everything we will later build upon begins during this period.

Phase 2 – Acceleration

The spaceship climbs ever more steeply and travels ever faster. The Earth falls away and the sky grows darker. Acceleration presses us into our seats while the power of the ascent carries us forward. The stars stretch into long, brilliant lines beside us.

Many of us experience our careers in a similar way. We want to progress, accomplish something meaningful and leave our mark. We accept responsibility, lead people and organisations, and overcome resistance. Years and decades race past; one goal has barely been reached before the next appears.

Phase 3 – The new orbit

Then the view changes. The engines grow quiet, acceleration fades and, after all the noise, we find ourselves surrounded by weightless silence. In the distance, a breathtakingly beautiful planet appears, glowing in deep blue, emerald green, turquoise and violet. Unknown continents, oceans and luminous clouds come into view.

This new planet represents everything that may still be possible after an executive career: new roles and relationships, learning and creating, social impact, shared projects – and aspects of life that received too little time or attention during the years of acceleration.

The career was the acceleration. The new planet is the possibility. The course towards it is ours to choose.

Why does preparation matter?

A beautiful planet alone does not create a stable orbit

A spaceship does not automatically enter a new orbit simply because a planet appears ahead.

The destination must be chosen, the course calculated well in advance, the speed adjusted and the decisive manoeuvre initiated at the right moment. React too late, and the ship may fly past the planet. Arrive unprepared, and it may never achieve a stable orbit.

The same is true of the third phase of life.

Preparation is not a single decision, nor is it merely the choice of a new activity.

It means considering what will give our days structure, where and how we still want to make a difference, which communities we want to belong to, what we still want to learn, build or pass on – and how family, health, freedom and financial security fit into that picture.

The earlier we ask these questions, the more time we have to test possible roles, build new relationships and turn a personal vision gradually into reality.

  • Who am I when position and title no longer define me?

  • How do I want to use my experience, knowledge and relationships?

  • What rhythm do I want to give my week and my year?

  • With whom do I want to think, create or work?

  • What do I still want to learn, build, pass on or experience?

Who did we create it for?

For experienced leaders who want to shape the years ahead consciously

Harmadik Pálya is not simply a retirement programme and is not tied to a particular age. It is for people who have carried significant responsibility for many years and are now approaching a change of role, or have already left their previous leadership position.

  • Leaders who are still active in their current positions but expect a transition within the next three to five years.

  • People who have already left their previous executive role, whether voluntarily or unexpectedly.

  • People who are looking for more than activities to occupy them and want to create a meaningful, balanced and personal plan for life.

  • People who are open to the thinking of other experienced leaders and willing to contribute their own knowledge.

  • People who want to discover new roles, collaborations or perhaps an entirely new direction.

What do participants gain?

A clearer picture, new connections and concrete next steps

  • A more conscious and complete picture of what their own third phase could look like.

  • Honest exchange with people who are approaching a similar transition or have already experienced it.

  • New roles, projects and opportunities for collaboration.

  • The opportunity to test and refine ideas before the end of an active executive career.

  • The gradual development of a personal Harmadik Pálya Plan that considers not only work, but life as a whole.

How do we achieve this?

Thoughts become conversations – and conversations open new directions

Harmadik Pálya is an initiative and community that will grow step by step. It does not seek to give everyone the same ready-made answers. It creates a setting in which the right questions, different experiences and honest conversations can reveal new possibilities.

  • Harmadik Pálya Salon

a monthly curated gathering with an inspiring contribution, moderated discussion and personal exchange.

  • Thematic workshops

small-group sessions exploring personal vision, time structure, new roles, relationships, health, financial parameters and social impact.

  • Personal planning and mentoring

individual support for those who want to develop their own Harmadik Pálya Plan in greater depth.

  • Community and collaboration

connections from which new projects, joint initiatives or mentoring relationships may emerge.

  • Articles and conversations

selected ideas and personal experiences about shaping life consciously after an active executive career.

The first encounter

An evening for people who do not want to leave their next phase to chance

The Harmadik Pálya Salon is neither a conventional conference nor a retirement-planning seminar. We meet in a small, carefully curated group. Each evening begins with a compelling idea or personal story, followed by a moderated conversation and informal personal exchange.

The aim is not for everyone to find a final answer in a single evening. The first step is to leave with questions they may never have asked before – and to meet people with whom it is worth continuing the conversation.

Personal motivation

Tamás Vahl – Why Harmadik Pálya became important to me

For more than 25 years, I have worked with companies, teams and leaders as an executive, adviser and mentor. Preparing for change, thinking strategically and planning the next move consciously have always been at the centre of my work.

I am now entering a stage of life in which, after years in executive roles, I must ask the question anew: How do I want to use my experience, my time and my freedom in the years ahead?

Conversations with several people in similar situations made it clear to me that many successful leaders have no well-formed answer. They may have ideas for individual activities, but these rarely connect to form a complete vision. That is why I am starting Harmadik Pálya: not because I know every answer, but because I believe that better answers can emerge when the right people, questions and experiences come together.

This initiative applies one of Vahlderix’s central ideas to a new field: a significant part of success is created not at the moment of execution, but through foresight, preparation and intelligent decisions.
